“I was referred to Linda Samuels in the summer of 2012 after failing 6 times to execute an effective nutrition strategy for a Half Ironman Triathlon. I had excellent fitness leading into all of my races, I would execute the swim and the bike legs of the race as planned, but I could not put together a good run for the life of me. I felt miserable during the run leg of the races and I felt sick after the races. My coach and I were stumped and I was starting to question why I was sacrificing so much of my time for a race that I couldn’t execute.
I contacted Linda and she immediately identified that I might have a resistance to some of the supplements I was taking before and during my races. In addition, she was able to identify that I was a heavy, salty sweater and I was not taking in enough fluids and sodium during the races. I also may have had an opportunity to improve my training by incorporating some dietary changes.
With a completely overhauled hydration/fueling strategy, I’m pleased to say that not only did my training become more effective, I also qualified for the 70.3 World Championships at my next race, Ironman 70.3 Steelhead. “I started working with Linda in my third year of triathlon. I am a very dedicated tri-athlete and have put in the training necessary to be successful in racing. I have worked with a coach since day one. I have used a power meter and a Garmin to measure my fitness since day one. However, on race day, with what should have been very achievable goals and strategies in place, my body was completely shutting down after, and often times during the end of the bike portion of the race. The same was happening during long training sessions, especially as the weather warmed up and the dew point climbed higher. I made a coaching change year three and hired Brett Petersen of Petersen Performance Lab. My fitness went up, but I was still falling apart during the races and long training sessions. Brett brought Linda on board and Linda helped me with two issues I was having. First, after a Q&A, she suspected I was experiencing exercise induced GERD and urged me to see a medical professional. She was right. Two weeks after seeing the doctor, problem solved. Second, Linda put me through some testing and determined I was sweating more than any athlete she had worked with! I was losing electrolytes and wasn’t replacing them properly She came up with a detailed plan and we had two weeks to practice before race day. Well, race day came with temps into the 90s and high humidity…I took second in my age group and had a PR (at an Ironman 70.3 race)! Furthermore, I had never felt stronger. I got off the bike and felt strong on the run. I was flying by everyone, the vast majority of whom were walking in the extreme conditions. There is no doubt in my mind that Linda’s detailed plan and guidance were a major factor in my success. Linda sent me an e-mail to congratulate me before I had even told her about my results.
